Edison - John W. McLaughlin, 75, died Tuesday (March 2, 2010), surrounded by his family, at the Parker Home, Piscataway. Mr. McLaughlin was born in Jersey City and lived in E. Orange before residing in Edison for the past 45 years.
Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his loving family, wife of 52 years Mary Ann, his daughter Lynne Metz, his son John S. McLaughlin, their spouses Keith and Emmy, his sisters Alice Davis of Philadelphia and Mary Jontry of N.Y. City, and his grandson Daniel Metz. He was pre-deceased by his brother Frank.
Mr. McLaughlin was an Electrical Engineer for Bell Laboratories where he was involved in pioneering work that has impacted our lives. In the 1960's, he was on the team that launched the first ever telecommunications satellite, and later, in the 1980's, he worked on voice over the Internet. Telstar 1 relayed the first television pictures, telephone calls and fax images through space and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. His work was honored in 1963, by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, for the most outstanding original paper. Retiring after 32 years from Bell Labs, he started a second career as a Financial Planner, helping hundreds of families secure their futures. He received his undergraduate Degree in Electrical Engineering from NJIT, a Master's Degree in E.E. as well as a Master's Degree in Statistics from Rutgers University. John will be remembered as an avid bridge player and an ACBL Senior Life Master, he was also an expert postal chess player and ran in the Newark Mini-marathon.
John's family would like to extend their gratitude to the Parker Home for their consistently cheerful, thorough and expert care. We recognize the genuine warmth provided in their devotion to John's well being. In our hearts, we believe that Parker is truly the best nursing home in NJ.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Friday, March 5th between 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, March 6th for a 9:30 Mass at St Helena's R.C.Ch. 950 Grove Avenue, N. Edison.
