Bernard J. (Ben) Mondi, 87

Scotch Plains – Bernard J. Mondi, 87, died Thursday, February 4, 2010. Born in the Bronx, he lived in Scotch Plains for 30 years before moving to Somerset in 1990.

Mr. Mondi was a veteran of World War II, having served in the in the U.S Army as a Staff Sergeant in both the European and Asian Theaters of Operation.

After his discharge from the Army he was a Supervisor for Igo Brothers in Newark and then embarked on an entrepreneurial business career that included Republic Wire, Universal Warehouse, Eastern Fire Sprinkler, Snark Products and Mondi-Rand Farms.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church serving as a Trustee for over 40 years, a Past Grand Knight of the John S. Neligan Counsel of the Knights of Columbus, a member of UNICO and founding member of the Kidney Fund of NJ. Mr. Mondi also served as a Trustee for the Union County College Board Higher Education and was a past Chairman of the Scotch Plains Planning Board.

He was predeceased by his wife, Theodora, who died in 1981 and his brothers Anthony and Vincent Mondi. He is survived by his daughters Catherine Mondi, Joan Mondi and her husband Rocco, Barbara Roselli and her husband Frank, Linda DeGaetano and her husband Joe, and his sons Freddy and his wife Mary and Scott and his wife Elena. Mr. Mondi is also survived by his sister Liz Longo and Sophie Stanton who was his friend and companion for 25 years. He also has 13 beloved grandchildren.

The funeral will be from Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, on Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. Then to Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church, 1571 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains, for a funeral Mass at 10:30 A.M. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-9 PM.
